In anticipation of the highly awaited return of Skyfire, Underground Spirits was thrilled to team up with Hit 104.7 to create the official "2024 Skyfire Gin."
A Blend Crafted by You
The journey commenced with a bold call to action. Wilko & Courts, making their comeback on the airwaves, turned to the wisdom of the masses, inviting listeners to suggest botanicals for a gin that would encapsulate the essence of Skyfire's return. The response was overwhelming, with a botanical ballot box brimming with creativity and a touch of madness. What started as an expected array of junipers and citrus peels quickly transformed with suggestions like retro popping candy flooding in. Guided by the expertise of Underground, Wilko & Courts embarked on a flavour odyssey, exploring botanicals ranging from the dark, malty depths of Scottish ale to the effervescent joy of regional sparkling wine. Each botanical brought its own unique character to the mix, leading to a gin that was as unique as their morning show—a blend of celebration, nostalgia, and pure joy.
The Final Product: A Dive into the Botanicals
The Scottish dark ale laid down the opening notes, evoking memories of the inaugural Skyfire event in 1989, where radios synchronised to the tune of "I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.
The effervescence of regional sparkling wine added a celebratory touch, reminiscent of the sound of fireworks and the joyous atmosphere of Skyfire.
Retro popping candy brought the excitement of fireworks to the palate, echoing the nostalgic crackle of vintage radios.
Buddha's Hand contributed a citrus explosion, mirroring the spectacle of fireworks both in flavour and visual flair.
Gunpowder Tea ignited the blend with a spark of intrigue, symbolising the controlled yet wild spirit of pyrotechnics.
Completing the ensemble were the classic juniper, coriander seed, and angelica root, essential elements that elevated the gin to unforgettable heights. Produced using Underground's unique cryofiltration process, the Skyfire Gin was smooth and silky spirit, the hallmark of Underground Spirits.
The Big Reveal
A voting scandal shook the capital as Wilko received NO votes, prompting suspicion. An anonymous phone call revealed a problem with the submission, leading to speculation of an inside job. Courts' winning illustration was brought to life by Underground's design team, culminating in the beautiful bottle seen today.
The Launch
Amidst Skyfire Gin cocktail sipping, Wilko & Courts unveiled the final product at a lively event hosted by Leyla Bar. The night was frivolity and excitement, a fitting celebration of the return of Skyfire.
Skyfire 2024
Together, with gin Skyfire cocktails in hand, we all experienced the joy and spectacle of Skyfire 2024 at Lake Burley Griffin. Such a memorable celebration of our community's spirit and creativity - oh what a display!
